The film portrays the exploits of a deranged serial-killer whose victims are each judged guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He justifies his horrific crimes by viewing himself as the sword of god, carrying out absolution for the worlds ignorance of the sins. Boniface was intrigued not only by the narrative and its depth of cultural baggage, but also by the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. For Boniface the film led to research on the medieval origins of the Seven Deadly Sins, study of their portrayal by writers and artists including Dante and Gustave Dore, and a greater appreciation of the power they still hold over the imagination.
